Making Math

Maker Learning Cycles–Math

Build a model car—learn some math! Design an art project—lean some math! Maker Learning Cycles help children build enthusiasm, agency, and ownership in their mathematics learning. Each cycle begins with a maker challenge, and develops grade-level math through follow-up lessons based in the context of the challenge.

Project Make the Way

Project Make the Way was a 2015-17 collaboration between the Santa Rosa City Schools (SRCS), Sonoma State University (SSU), and the California Mathematics Project: North Coast, funded by the California Department of Education through the California Math-Science Partnership program. Sixty-five SRCS teachers from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade worked for two years with teams of professional developers and curriculum developers from SSU and the Math Project to develop and the design of the Maker Learning Cycles; they crafted and tested 1-2 cycles in every grade level. These cycles are the first published in the lists above.
